Dr. Jeremy Pickens Selected to Serve as Organizer for International Forum

DENVER—Sept. 19, 2011—Dr. Jeremy Pickens, senior applied research scientist at Catalyst and one of the world’s preeminent search scientists, has been selected to serve as co-organizer of the 3rd International Workshop on Collaborative Information Retrieval (CIR2011), which will be held on Oct. 28, 2011, in Glasgow, Scotland, in conjunction with the 20th ACM Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM2011).

In addition, Dr. Pickens will moderate the featured panel at CIKM, “When Search is Not Solitary: Perspectives on Social and Collaborative Search.” The Oct. 26 panel will examine various forms of multi-person search and explore the pros and cons of each. Joining Dr. Pickens as panelists will be Dr. Ed H. Chi, research scientist at Google; Dr. Gene Golovchinsky, senior research scientist at FX Palo Alto Laboratory Inc.; Dr. Krishna Gummadi, head of the Networked Systems Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems; and Dr. Meredith Ringel Morris, research scientist at Microsoft Research.

The annual CIKM provides an international forum for presentation and discussion of research on information and knowledge management. The CIR workshop will focus on various aspects of collaborative information retrieval related to algorithms and interfaces. Collaborative information retrieval is a form of search in which a group of people who share a common information need actively collaborate to achieve it.

Dr. Pickens is an internationally recognized pioneer in the field of collaborative search. At Catalyst, he focuses on researching and developing methods of using collaborative search to achieve more intelligent and precise results in e-discovery search and review. He also studies other ways to enhance search and review within the Catalyst system.

Before joining Catalyst, Dr. Pickens spent five years as a research scientist at FX Palo Alto Laboratory Inc., where his major research themes included video search and collaborative exploratory search. He has a number of patents and patents pending in the field of information retrieval and collaborative search.Dr. Pickens earned his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval. He conducted his post-doctoral work at King's College, London, on a joint grant with Goldsmiths University of London.
